Potato Harvest

Hello Families!

It was great to welcome our Bobcats back today after the long weekend! Last week was great, with the highlight being a visit from the Richmond Fire Department.

On Friday, the staff finalized our Cafeteria Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as a followup to our recently adopted Bobcat Code of Conduct. Our goal is to make expectations clear and consistent for students and staff. We hope that you will talk with your children at home about the importance of using good manners in the places we share meals with others. I think we all forget sometimes that manners must be taught and practiced.

We have a quiet four days this week with an uptick in activity for next week, which features our first Spirit Week of the year, picture retake day on Tuesday (Don't worry; the crazy socks won't show in the picture!), and Math Night on Thursday. Scroll down to see the details for Spirit Week and Math Night.

I hope you enjoy the rest of this week!

Message from School Counselor Cindy Edson

Dear MBES families,

This is a quick note from your school counselor about some up coming guidance lessons I will be teaching so that you can help reinforce the concepts at home.

But, first let me introduce myself. My name is Cindy Edson, and this is my first year at Marcia Buker Elementary School. I love to run, hike, and read, and I have been working in education for 34 years. I have truly enjoyed meeting your children and those of you who were able to make it to the open house.

I love watching soccer over at the Middle/High School, and when your children are in middle school maybe I will be able to coach them in cross country running.

In the coming weeks, we will be starting a school-wide unit on personal space, which I will be teaching in guidance classes. The goal of the lessons is to teach students to:

  1. Ask the person before you hug or touch them. “Can I give you a hug?”

  2. Stay inside your own personal space bubble.

  3. Keep your space clean. Don’t mess up the spaces around you.

  4. Use your words, not your hands. Talk to, wave, or smile at others when you want them to notice you.

  5. Watch for signs that you are too close. Back up. Back up to make space or move to a different location. Ask the person politely to back up or stop touching.

  6. Keep your hands and feet close to your own body.

  7. Use body language and expression to show that we are uncomfortable.

  8. Ask an adult for help.

These are important skills for our students to learn as a matter of safety and personal empowerment. I hope you will talk with your child at home about the lessons.
